Welcome to Hal & Jenny 2003 Adventure to Cancun Mexico.

In March 2003, we went on a short vacation to Cancun Mexico with our good friends, Jerry and Marylyn Mitchell. The trip started with a night in a hotel at the Las Angels airport. After a nice dinner in Manhattan Beach and a nights rest at the hotel, we flew Mexicana Airlines to Cancun Mexico. The trip was fine, the rental car was old and tired and the weather was hot and very humid. There was no air conditioning in the car so we opened the windows and drove really fast.
Our hotel was the Blue Bay Village. It was all inclusive, one price covered everything, rooms, meals, drinks. They had pools and boats, bars, theaters, everything.
The room that they gave us had a view of the parking lot. We were not happy. We looked at Jerry & Marylyn's room and it very nice. We walked around the hotel grounds. it was beautiful. Being a take charge kind of guy, I decided that Jenny should complain. She did a good job, we got a new room with a patio that looked out on a grassy area near one of the pools. The room was big and even had a refrigerator. It looked just like the rooms did on their web page. Jerry and Marylyn had a balcony that overlooked a courtyard with a bar. It was fine until the rock band showed about 9 PM and played until 3 in the morning . They endured and stayed with that room. One of the benefits of our hotel was no children ... no kids running through the area and jumping into the pool ... It was an 'Adult' hotel and did have a lot of topless sunbathers ... Jenny said that that was alright but no ray of sun would touch her in any part that her kids couldn't see ... After the novelty wore off, it was no big deal ... While there may not have been any minor children there, there were plenty of college kids who partied until the wee small hours ... that was fine ... we all had a good time ...
The next day, we drove around admiring the lives of the rich and famous ... we were looking for a place to snorkel but we were not successful ... Jerry had been told of a place out of town that had a river that lead into a lagoon and then into the ocean ... It sounded great and the next day, we drove the 75 miles to Xel-Há (Shay-Ha) ... We walked through the jungle to a small, clear river ... we snorkeled while the current carried us downstream to a beautiful lagoon ... the snorkeling wasn't the best but the area was beautiful ... we did see some really big Parrot fish ..
The next day we went on a bus tour to the Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá ... I had read a lot about the Maya before the trip and I was really impressed with what we saw ...
By Thursday, we were ready for a day of rest ... we spent the day around the pool ... the pool had a swim-up bar that was handy ...I read a book and took a long nap ... Jerry and Marylyn shopped but I abstained ...
Friday, we took a boat tour to the tiny island of Comtoy ... this island is an eco-preserve ... it's a nesting place for millions of birds and is a real tropical paradise ... it was very windy and the sea was very rough ... the snorkeling might have been very good in calm weather ... we did snorkel in a very strong current and we were very glad to be with the boats captain who helped us with the current ... we were on the boat with a group of 40 Italians ... they all worked for the same company which had sent them on a company paid vacation ... most were young women and they really knew how to Party ... on the boat ride home, we all drank Tequila shooters and the Italians danced ... it was great ...
Saturday came too soon but it was time to fly home ... The tired car got us to the airport ... we flew to Mexico City ... it must be the biggest city in the world ... 23 million people ... we saw the smog from 100 miles away ... we flew over miles of dirt colored houses with dirt streets ... after a couple of hours in the very modern airport, we flew to LA ... We picked up our car at the hotel and drove home to cool, beautiful San Diego ... We had a great trip ...
